Tim came to me to fight bedbugs. He is so kind and very knowledgeable. He really reassured me and explained everything well. I’m sure my home is in good hands! Hopefully I won’t have to use him again 😉 but I can only recommend him or the pest control company Van der Velden.
Very satisfied

Great service and workmanship by Tim.
I could never have controlled the infestation on my own.
He has honor in his work and does not rest until the last mouse is gone.
He even helped me vacuum under the kitchen counter because I couldn’t do it myself.
Very satisfied
Pigeon nuisance and its consequences
Two pigeons on the windowsill giving each other heads may look cute, until at some point a whole colony is formed. Subsequently, they can wreak havoc:
- Diseases: Pigeons spread bacteria, viruses, and fungi by leaving their feces, dander, and feathers everywhere. When people come into contact with this, they can become ill or have an allergic reaction. There are also many insects and other pests in the pigeon nests that can infect us.
- Damage to buildings and houses: pigeon droppings contain nitric acid. This can affect buildings, statues, works of art and the paint of your car, among other things. They can also move the roof tiles of your home to penetrate.
- Blockages: Pigeons use twigs and leaves to build their nests. Along with their feathers and lint, this can seriously clog the gutter.
- Damage to crops: Pigeons that live in agricultural areas soil and eat the crops. This results in major financial damage for the farmers.
- Odour nuisance: Pigeons carry an unpleasant odour with them. Their nests and droppings also give off a nasty stench.
- Noise pollution: The sound that pigeons make is called 'cooing'. This is still acceptable for one pigeon, but pigeons cooing in groups can be very irritating. Especially when it's still early in the morning.

What kind of pigeons are there?
In the Netherlands there are several pigeons that we see both in the city and in the countryside. These are the city pigeon, wood pigeon, cave pigeon and the Turkish turtle dove. The city pigeon, the name says it all, is common in villages and towns. They hatch eggs all year round, which can quickly increase their numbers and nuisances. The wood pigeon is mainly found in gardens, parks and forests, but they can also be found in cities and in the countryside. You can recognize them by the white spot on their neck and the white band on their wings. Wherever you go, you can encounter the cave pigeon everywhere. They are gray in color like the other species, but there are shiny green spots on their necks. The Turkish turtle dove prefers the countryside. They are beige to light gray in color and have a black stripe on their neck. Agricultural companies in particular have pigeon nuisance because the animals love seeds, grains and legumes.
When is there a pigeon nuisance?
Pigeons are looking for food all day long. They don’t do this alone, they often settle down in a group. That’s where the problem arises. One pigeon is not easily bothered, but when they pass by with a large group they can cause a lot of nuisance.
Pigeons can be a nuisance to us all year round. As long as there is enough food nearby, and they have a sheltered and warm place to hatch their eggs. In the summer period we experience the most inconvenience. It is nice and warm and there is a lot of food to be found. In addition, a pair of city pigeons can produce up to 16 youngsters per year. The number of pigeons can therefore increase quickly.
Where do you find pigeons?
Pigeons eat everything edible in cities or villages. You can think of bread and other food scraps, bird food, fruits, insects, young plants and much more. So you often come across them at trash cans, snack bars, restaurants, squares and other places where trash is left behind. In the countryside, they throw themselves into seeds, grains, legumes and crop residues.
They build their nests in places where there is enough food to be found. In doing so, they prefer a hard surface. Think of roofs, gutters, balconies, chimneys, towers, bridges and terraces. Through a hole in the roof, they even penetrate vacant buildings or conquer a place in your attic. The higher pigeons can build their nest, the safer they feel.
How expensive is it to get rid of pigeons?
Do you want to put an end to the nuisance caused by pigeons and do you want to know what the costs of combating pigeon nuisance are? That depends on the size of the building where you are located and the number of pigeons that are present at your building. The larger the number of pigeons, the more pigeon guards we have to place. That is why we always come to assess the situation first and provide a tailor-made offer. In addition, we do not charge call-out charges. With the men of Bestrijdingsdienst.nl you will quickly be free of pests again!
What effective control techniques do we use against pigeons?
If you are dealing with a pigeon infestation, the professional pest controllers at Van der Velden Pest Control will get to work for you. They have a lot of experience in fighting pigeons and ensure that you are quickly rid of these animals.
Pigeon control does not mean that we kill the pigeons, because this is forbidden. Instead, protection is installed. Fighting pigeons can be done in different ways:
- Pigeon protection: This is a method in which special pins and nets are placed. These ensure that the pigeons can no longer land, rest or build a nest in or on your property. In addition, it also helps to repel other birds, such as starlings and gulls.
- Optical protection: reflective shells are placed on railings or edges, making it look as if there is a fire.
- Electrical systems: electric fences are installed, for example to control pigeons on your balcony or on the roof. When pigeons touch this, they get a shock. This is not the same as barbed wire, which can injure pigeons.
What are the signs of a pigeon infestation?
A few pigeons are not immediately a problem. When they stick around longer and start reproducing, a pigeon infestation can develop. In that case, they have found a nesting place and enough food. Here’s how to spot an infestation:
- Your car, windows, window frames, garden, etc. are soiled with excrement. Are you bothered by pigeons on your balcony? Then you’ll probably see a lot of poop on the railing and windows.
- Considerable noise nuisance that is clearly caused by a group of pigeons.
- The gutters and drainage pipes become clogged by the material that pigeons use for their nests (leaves, twigs, fluff, etc.).
- You are bothered by other pests, such as mites or moths. These are attracted to the nests.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fighting Pigeons
A pigeon doesn’t like shiny things like mirrored dishes or foil, because they confuse them. They are also startled by loud noises and sudden movements. They avoid places with pins or nets, because they can’t land there. Electric electric fence also keeps them away.
Pigeons build their nests on solid surfaces such as window sills, eaves, balconies, gutters, attics and under bridges, viaducts or in parking garages. Their natural predators are birds of prey such as peregrine falcons, hawks and sparrowhawks. Cats are also natural enemies.
To keep pigeons away, you can hang shiny things like CDs or foil to scare them away. Put spikes or hang nets – in places where they like to sit, such as on your balcony or windowsill. You can also use electric fences to keep them away.
