How do I identify a longhorn beetle?
The larvae of the longhorn beetle hatch after a few weeks after laying and start feeding immediately. The larvae eat their way through tunnels, these tunnels are usually on the surface of the wood. Unfortunately, these tunnels are not recognizable from the outside, this is because they block access with sawdust and droppings.
You can recognize an active longhorn beetle infestation by several indications:
- Bumps in the wood: the longhorn beetle is located just below the surface of the wood.
You can sometimes recognize the deterioration of wood when visible bumps (bulges) are visible in the wood.
It looks a bit like a varicose vein on the surface of the wood. - Audible sounds: The larvae of the critter have a powerful jaw that can produce audible sounds.
Especially when it is quiet in the house, for example at night, you can often hear the nail sound in the window frame.
If you’re not quite sure, you can also use a stethoscope.
Important to know: young larvae generally make less noise than older larvae. - Sawdust on the ground: as mentioned, the larvae of the longhorn beetle often block the passages and exits.
However, there may still be a little bit of sawdust on the floor due to vibration.
But even that is not definitive proof of infection by the longhorn beetle.
