Mosquitoes can be found anywhere in the house. However, they do have a preference for certain places. Think of places with high humidity levels such as the bathroom or near the sink in the kitchen. From these places, they move to other rooms in your house. This is because they are attracted to body heat, body odors and carbon dioxide. No wonder you hear them in the bedroom at night.

Mosquitoes: what species are there?
In the Netherlands, there are five types of mosquitoes, namely: mosquitoes, tiger mosquitoes, moth mosquitoes, long-legged mosquitoes and dance-legged mosquitoes. Fortunately, the mosquitoes that are active in the Netherlands cannot spread nasty diseases. The special thing about mosquitoes is that the mosquitoes are always female. They only do this when they have been fertilized by a male. This is because our blood contains extra nutrients that are very important for the reproduction of mosquitoes. Because we all have blood in our bodies, it is extra difficult to keep mosquitoes at bay.
Mosquito control: not only in summer
People often think that mosquitoes are only a nuisance in the summer, but that is not true. Although mosquitoes are less active in the winter, a mosquito infestation can also occur during the winter period. Fortunately, there is plenty you can do to prevent a mosquito infestation in both summer and winter:
- Make sure there is as little standing water as possible in your home or office. Fertilized mosquitoes lay their eggs in this water.
- Equip your windows and doors with well-fitting mosquito nets. For example, mosquitoes can only enter to a limited extent.
- Make sure there is ‘moving’ air in the house, for example with an air conditioner or fan.
- Gutters and water drains are excellent hiding places for mosquitoes. Make sure they don’t get clogged.
