What are moles?
There are different types of moles worldwide. In Europe, the common mole (Talpidae) is the most common, along with the shrew mole. Both species are quite similar to the shrew. Moles have very powerful front legs that are turned outwards and have an extra finger. This makes them excellent diggers and they can work their way through almost any type of soil. Occasionally, they dig a hole upwards to air out, which creates the well-known molehills. Moles live mainly on insects, such as worms, beetles and larvae, which also live in the soil.
A mole typically grows to a size of 12 to 16 centimeters and has a well-developed sense of touch and smell. Moles have very small eyes that barely function, hence the expression “as blind as a mole”. Despite their limited vision, moles are excellent at navigating, using their sense of touch and smell to orient themselves. The body of a mole is almost cylindrical, and the fur is slate black. Moles can be a real pest, especially in gardens. They cause countless molehills and corridors, with which they can destroy lawns.
How do you recognize a mole infestation?
In principle, a mole infestation is quite easy to recognize. Some examples of how to recognize a mole infestation:
- Molehills – The easiest way to spot an infestation is to see molehills. One molehill is not yet an infestation, but as soon as your entire field is full of piles of sand and soil, you can safely say that you are suffering from an infestation.
- Visible moles – Small black critters that swarm the grass strangely. This is the best way to see a mole walking around on land. However, they don’t do this very often, so if you see one, you can pretty much be sure there are more around.
- Pits – The downside of moles is that they dig tunnels, which creates potholes in your garden. This can be quite annoying and you want to do something about it immediately.
In short, if your lawn is full of molehills, chances are you’re dealing with a mole infestation. Fighting moles yourself is often ineffective. It is therefore advisable to call in specialists so that the chance of recurrence of the infestation remains minimal.
