Tim came to me to fight bedbugs. He is so kind and very knowledgeable. He really reassured me and explained everything well. I’m sure my home is in good hands! Hopefully I won’t have to use him again 😉 but I can only recommend him or the pest control company Van der Velden.

Great service and workmanship by Tim.
I could never have controlled the infestation on my own.
He has honor in his work and does not rest until the last mouse is gone.
He even helped me vacuum under the kitchen counter because I couldn’t do it myself.

4 steps how to fight longhorn beetles yourself
You can make an attempt, but this carries some risks.
We always recommend hiring a pest specialist.
You can then be sure that these pests are controlled properly.
Should you still want to get started yourself, use the following method:
- Prepare infested wood: longhorn beetles are often found in basements and attics, because these are the places where most wood is present. If you find out for yourself that this is where the wood-infesting insect is, you can take action yourself by taking the following steps.
- Make the wood moisture-free.
- Sand the wood well and make it dust-free.
- Apply the longhorn beetle pesticide you purchased.
Caution!
Always read the package insert because the pesticide you buy may be toxic.
All these the pesticides are not as effective as those of a professional pest controller.
In addition, you run the risk that the pesticide will not reach all the larvae because they are too deep in the wood.
As a result, you will continue to suffer from longhorn beetles.
Longhorn beetle larvae only die in extreme heat or extreme cold.

What you didn't already know about the longhorn beetle
You’re sitting quietly in your living room, but you hear soft gnawing somewhere.
Where is that coming from?
Suddenly, you see sawdust lying in the window frame, and there’s a little bit of sawdust further on as well.
Chances are you have the longhorn beetle in your home!
The longhorn beetle belongs to the wood beetles and is totally crazy about wood.
They feed mainly on raw wood and lay eggs with larvae.
One longhorn beetle lays about 200 eggs at a time and it takes about 10 years for a larva to develop into a longhorn beetle.
Longhorn beetle larvae cause the greatest damage.
Although they look small and harmless, they are absolutely not.
In fact, they can cause irreparable damage to your home.
On this page, you can read all about the longhorn beetle and how Bestrijdingsdienst Van der Velden can help with longhorn beetle control!
How do longhorn beetles get into my house?
Longhorn beetles can enter your home in a variety of ways.
Since they love wood, they can be in various wood products you bring into your home or buy.
For example, in used furniture you buy through Marketplace.
Another way the longhorn beetle can enter your home is through wood for the fireplace.
This is often uncontrolled wood that you wouldn’t expect to find longhorn beetles or other wood beetles in.
So always check wood and wood products you bring into your home.
If you see a block of wood with holes in it, it could mean the longhorn beetle is in here.
And do you already have an infested piece of wood furniture that can’t be saved?
Then destroy it as soon as possible!
What can I recognize longhorn beetles by?
The longhorn beetle is easy to recognize, but with the woodworm it is a more difficult story. The longhorn beetle can be recognized by a number of characteristics. Although you can’t see complete burrows, a longhorn beetle plague does show itself in other ways. Longhorn beetle larvae can be found, for example, in so-called exit openings. As soon as a larva has eaten enough, it makes a hole in the wood so that the animal can fly out. These holes can be recognized with the naked eye. In addition, the larvae of the longhorn beetle make sound when they move in the wood. You can then hear very soft gnawing. Finally, you can recognize longhorn beetles by boron dust. When wood is eaten, boron dust is released. If you encounter this in your home, call in a pest specialist as soon as possible.
How does the longhorn beetle spread?
To lay eggs, adult longhorn beetles look for wood.
This is where they lay eggs.
They lay these mostly in cracks and holes.
Each time, a female longhorn beetle lays about 200 eggs in these openings.
When these eggs hatch, each larva eats a passageway through the wood.
This leads to weakened beams and structures in homes and buildings, which can lead to instability and danger to the building.
So it is essential to act quickly when you suspect longhorn beetles are present.
What does longhorn beetle control cost?
Fighting the longhorn beetle is a difficult job and should be done in a special way.
When you discover the longhorn beetle and want to have it controlled, contact us. Bestrijdingsdienst.nl always comes to visit you first, free of charge.
This way we can see and assess the situation on location and you know immediately where you stand.
What effective control techniques do we use against longhorn beetles?
Longhorn beetle control requires a special approach and in most cases three different control techniques can be chosen:
- The hot air method
- A surface treatment method
- The injection method
What is the hot air method?
The larvae of a longhorn beetle will die in heat or cold.
Since we cannot take your entire house to -18 degrees, we choose the hot air method.
In this case, our specialists seal off the room where the longhorn beetle and its larvae are.
A heat pump is then put into the room to raise the temperature.
The adult longhorn beetles, as well as the larvae, will die because they cannot withstand high temperatures.
The advantage of this method is that no poison is used and you do not have to leave your house during the longhorn beetle control.
What is the surface treatment method?
When surface treatment is chosen, our specialists tackle the wood where the longhorn beetle and larvae are located.
We then smear the affected wood with a pesticide that you can’t buy in stores.
This pesticide completely soaks into the wood and holes, killing the longhorn beetle and its larvae.
The nice thing about this pesticide is that the longhorn beetle will not return to this wood for +/- five years because it has been infested.
So re-infestation is not possible.
What is the injection method?
When the injection method is chosen, we will spray pesticide/poison into the corridors of the affected wood.
In this way, all the corridors are injected and the longhorn larvae will die.
When the longhorn beetle and longhorn larva come in contact with this pesticide, they do not survive.
We also offer to bring a piece of furniture to our office, for example.
This is because we can freeze wood objects here for 48 hours.
There is no guarantee on this treatment.
Of course, we advise you on the best method of treatment for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Both are bad, but the longhorn beetle can cause more damage.
This is because the longhorn beetle’s larvae are larger and make deeper burrows compared to the woodworm.
Choose a professional pest controller.
Pest controllers have special and effective pesticides and methods that you cannot buy or apply yourself.
You can recognize longhorn beetles by fly holes, soft gnawing, borings and holes in wood.
If you recognize these signs, you are most likely suffering from the longhorn beetle and should take action as soon as possible by having it controlled.
