- Itchy bumps on the skin: bedbug bites cause itchy red bumps on the skin. In most cases, you will have several bumps in a row or in a group.
- Small blood stains on sheets and pillowcases: when bedbugs feed, they sometimes leave small blood stains on your bedding.
- Small, brown insects: an adult bed bug is about the size of a grain of rice and has a flat, oval-shaped body. Young bedbugs are smaller and in most cases are translucent.
- Droppings: bed bugs often leave droppings in and/or around your bed. You can recognize these droppings by the red and/or black-brown dots.

What are bed bugs?
Bed bugs are reddish-brown and oval-shaped critters about 5 millimeters in size. They are somewhat shy and master at hiding themselves. Bed bugs often show themselves only when they want to feed. In their search for food (blood), these tiny critters can travel as much as 30 meters per night. Your body heat and breath (CO2) are the compass for bed bugs. The most favorite and convenient place for the bed bug to feed are your arms and legs. Your back and abdomen are not overlooked either.
How do we control bedbugs in a sustainable way?
Bed bugs are very annoying and cause a lot of nuisance. Having bedbugs professionally controlled by our specialist ensures that the bedbugs are effectively and permanently controlled. Bed bug control is done in the following ways:

Thereby, we recommend leaving the pesticide for a period of at least 5-6 weeks and not mopping the house during this period.
- Bed bug control with a steam treatment: With the steam treatment, our specialist heats all surfaces in your home with 180-degree steam. The bedbugs and eggs, present at that time, will die instantly. Despite the success of steam treatment, we often use this treatment in conjunction with Airless control. This is because the pesticide remains active longer and causes any remaining bedbugs to still die.
- Freezing. To ensure that bedbugs are eradicated, we recommend freezing your garments and shoes. At Van der Velden, we use special -24 degree freezers for this purpose. A freezing treatment takes 48 hours.
